Eating well in New York and not breaking the bank is possible, but you will have to choose well to avoid tourist traps.

What are some good inexpensive cultural restaurants in New York?

Any ethnic neighborhood, like Chinatown in Manhattan and Brooklyn, or Middle Eastern restaurants in every boros, will have small eateries with great food. Research the ethnic group eating at the restaurant – for example, a Chinese restaurant should have at least half of the Chinese customers. Don’t be surprised if the ethnic group gets a wider menu and better prices, that’s the price of being a foreigner.

Try a new dish you’ve never had before, be adventurous. Even at a slightly higher price than the regulars, you’ll be getting a real bargain. As an alternative, try ethnic food trucks. I used to eat Pierre’s falafel sandwiches when I was in college. Despite the reputation, no one I know has ever wanted to eat at a food truck, including having a “dirty water dog”. Hmm, I miss New York.

What shocks the British when they arrive in New York for the very first time?

Having literally landed at Heathrow a few hours ago of my trip to New York over the New Year, here are the things I noticed. Hopefully there is a mix of pros and cons. The size of the buildings. Admittedly, I live in a fairly rural area in the UK, so I’m not used to tall buildings. But I found that I had spent all week looking! A lack of places to eat. I really struggled to find places to eat. Wherever it looked good, it was ridiculously expensive. I’m sure the locals have a huge list of places to find food, but we really struggled.

The driving. Absolutely mental. It looks like carnage. The number of times I heard car horns was insane! How easy it is to navigate. I found it very easy to navigate the city. We walked everywhere except when we visited the 9/11 memorial and museum when we decided to take the metro.

The tip. Here in the UK most places give you your bill (cheque) and you pay the amount and then tip what you think the service was worth. What I didn’t like about New York was that many places gave you a tip percentage recommendation, with some places even calculating the amount and writing it on the bill.

Purchases. Didn’t really get a chance to shop, but a lot of the stores I went to seemed pretty empty. General food and drink prices. I couldn’t believe the food and drink prices, how expensive they were.

(I found the tap water quite nice though). The value for money in the different attractions. I found the cost of the attractions to be good value. Coming from an area of the UK heavily involved in the tourism industry, I know how expensive things can get. But I found that in New York, various museums, etc. were well priced and you could spend a lot of time there.

These are just a few of the things I can think of. I’m sure there are many more. I really liked New York. I’ve been to several cities in the UK and Europe and found New York to be one of the best. It was pretty clean, easy to navigate, felt safe (lots of police) and felt better than many other cities. Do not hesitate to ask questions 🙂

Here is a list of my 8 favorite places to try:

1. Hot dogs at Gray’s Papaya

Top-8-places-to-eat-in-New-York-2023

Starting the morning with energy is key to getting through a full day of sightseeing in New York without fainting. But where can you find a hearty American-style breakfast on the cheap? At Gray’s Papaya, of course! The temple of hot dogs in the Big Apple. They’re so popular that Barack Obama himself had his picture taken here shoving one for his 2008 election campaign.

As with Rizzo’s Pizza, the New York Times also hailed it as one of the best hot-pot restaurants dogs from New York. Plus, the prices are super cheap: a single hot dog costs $1, and each additional topping of chili, cheese, or relish costs $0.50. With these credentials, Gray’s Papaya is almost a must visit on iconic Broadway, very close to Central Park and Lincoln Center. I can assure you that I was not disappointed.

What should you try?

The queues at the entrance live up to the reputation of the establishment but they go quite quickly. I recommend ordering one of the breakfast specialties with coffee. They carry an omelette sandwich with cheese and ham, bacon or sausage for less than $4. Who is more Gray’s Papaya is also a good option to end a night out or at the Broadway theater as they are open 24 hours a day. With a hot dog and their famous papaya juice, you will return to the hotel to sleep with a smile from ear to ear.

Where is IT ?

You’ll find it at 2090 Broadway, New York, NY 10023. Hours:Open 24 hours.

2. Amy Ruth’s brunch

Top-8-places-to-eat-in-New-York-2023

A great place to grab brunch after touring Harlem or attending a Sunday gospel mass is Amy Ruth’s located in the heart of this New York neighborhood. If you are looking for the best cuisine in the south, you have come to the right place, everything is delicious here! They are famous for serving one of the tastiest chicken and waffles in the United States. A combination of waffles and fried chicken dressed in maple syrup that might sound a bit strange but works amazingly and is considered a legend in New York.

What should you try?

Other dishes I recommend on Amy Ruth’s menu are the BBQ ribs with BBQ sauce and a side of sweet potato, the hot chicken sandwich, or the breaded shrimp. To drink, a glass of lemonade and sweet tea called Moitié-Moitié. Super refreshing! The corn muffin with a little butter they serve as an appetizer while waiting for your food to be delivered is delicious. Although sometimes you have to wait in line to get a table, they are usually pretty quick with orders even if the place is crowded.

Where is it? 113 West 116th Street, New York, NY 10026

Opening hours Open Monday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

3. Typical Shake Shack Menus

Top-8-places-to-eat-in-New-York-2023

This list can’t be without a tasty fast food to end it. Have you ever heard of Shake Shack? It started as a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park and became a hit. In 2004 he opened his first location and since then they have made thousands of people happy with their hot dogs, burgers, crinkle fries and milkshakes –

me among them! Shake Shack has establishments all over New York, also in the most touristy areas, so it is a very popular option if you want to eat luxury for little money. Which Shake Shack to go to? The one I like the most is Madison Square Park because of the beautiful tree-lined setting it is in. It also has an outdoor terrace ideal for enjoying sunny days.

What should you try?

As for their menu, I must say that it is quite varied and they have vegetarian options. The burgers are to die for and the hot dogs are also very good. Like any self-respecting burger, they must be accompanied by a portion of fries with ketchup and to drink I advise you to try a glass (or two) of freshly brewed iced tea. If you have room for dessert, order a tub of ice cream, which is nothing like traditional ice cream. It’s made with milk, cream and egg yolks and is super creamy.

Where is it? The Madison Square Park Shake Shack is on the southeast corner of the park near Madison Avenue and E. 23rd Street.

Hours: The Madison Square Park Shake Shack is open daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

4. The best pizza is at Rizzo’s Pizza

iTop-8-places-to-eat-in-New-York-2023

Pizza is a very popular dish in New York. You can find it on virtually every street corner, from street stalls and fast food outlets to upscale restaurants. But where to eat slices that will transport you to seventh heaven? After trying their pizzas, I can say that Rizzo’s Pizza’s reputation as one of the best in New York is definitely well deserved.

Yelp rankings and New York Times reviews weren’t exaggerating when they included this Manhattan restaurant on their list of must-visit places in the city. After all, they are real specialists: they have been in business since 1959.

What should you try?

The pizzas are delicious. They are available in the classic round shape and also square with a super crispy edge. Their secret is in the dough: perfectly cooked, fine and light but firm, not soft at all. I recommend ordering the americana (chicken, red onion, bacon, barbecue sauce and mozzarella),

the diavola (chicken, red onion, bacon, barbecue sauce, hot sauce, parmigiano aioli and mozzarella) and the aumma aumma (sausage, meatball, ricotta, sauce and mozzarella) the most requested at Rizzo’s Pizza. They also have vegan and gluten free options which is a plus. For dessert, the famous cannoli, a typical Sicilian sweet made with ricotta. Delicious!

Where is it? Rizzo’s Pizza has two locations in New York. One in Manhattan’s Lower East Side (17 Clinton St. New York, NY 10002) and one in Queens (3013 Steinway St. Astoria, NY 11103).

Hours: The Manhattan site is open Monday through Thursday from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 12 p.m. to midnight and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 11 p.m.

5. Burger Joint’s Secret Burger

Top-8-places-to-eat-in-New-York-2023

Oh the burgers! The dish that best defines American cuisine at home and abroad. Deciding which is the best burger in New York is no small feat. Ingredients are important, but so is the ambiance of the place, because, one of the most unique restaurants in town to eat a good burger is Burger Joint, the secret burger joint near Fifth Avenue and Central Park.

But what is so special about this place? After a quick search on Google Maps, you will see that the address corresponds to a luxury hotel called Le Parker Méridien. You’ve come to the right place, don’t step back when you get there because the burger joint is hidden inside. But the funny thing is that it has nothing to do with the hotel. So you might be wondering how such an underground place ended up in such a lavish hotel?

It turns out that when the hotel wanted to build the building on this site, several inhabitants occupied this location. They all agreed with the hotel except the Burger Joint which did not want to sell their establishment. After some pressure and trial, the burger joint succeeded, so Le Parker Meridien had to build their hotel around the burger joint.

The result is a very striking contrast between the elegance of the hotel and the grunge style of the Burger Joint, which is precisely the charm of the place. This and the entrance seem to be hidden behind mysterious red curtains.

What should you try?

On the menu, find the basics of the burger: regular or cheeseburger, fries, drinks and shakes, and for dessert, ice cream and brownie. In 2012, it was awarded the title of third best burger in the world at the World Burger Competition. It’s nothing!

Where is it? It’s at 119 W 56th St, New York, NY 10019

Opening hours: Open every day from 11 a.m. to 11:20 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to midnight.

6.The best Indian food is at Tikka Indian Grill

How-To-Make-Butter-Chicken-Spicier-Foodiefavs-2023

If you’ve decided to take a trip to Williamsburg, Tikka Indian Grill is a good option for tasty food at reasonable prices. Whether you are an expert in Indian cuisine or a beginner, you will love the menu which they have adapted to all palates by drawing inspiration from the best of each region of India.

What should you try?

I’m a real fan of this bright Brooklyn restaurant for lunch. They have a lunch special that includes naan, samosas, and a main course for just $10. However, if you want to evaluate other options, I advise you to take a look at their menu because it is quite extensive. Two of my favorite dishes are the lamb vindaloo and the extra spicy black peppercorn chicken which comes with various sauces that you’ll want to soak up with bread.

Tikka Indian Grill is a very nice restaurant to enjoy a good meal in New York. The place is spacious, nicely decorated with large photographs of Indian scenes and as for the dishes, the secret of their success is that they use fresh ingredients from local suppliers combined with spices brought directly from Asia. You will want to repeat!

Where is it? Located at 185 Grand Street Brooklyn, NY – 11211

Hours : Open Monday through Thursday, 12:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.; Friday and Saturday 12 noon – midnight; Sunday 12:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

7. Katz Sandwiches

Top-8-places-to-eat-in-New-York-2023

Want to eat the best pastrami sandwich in New York? Then you have to go to Katz. There must be something special about their recipe as the restaurant has been around since 1888 and has become a city classic. The long lines of people waiting to enter testify to its success.

This Lower East Side deli is not only famous for its sandwich but also for being the setting for the most iconic scene in the movie ‘When Harry Met Sally’. In fact, if you notice that when you walk in there’s a sign saying where Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan were sitting and it says, “Where Harry met Sally…hope you got what she had !”.

What should you try?

But back to the food, what to order at Katz? Without a doubt, their famous pastrami sandwich is a must, although I also recommend the corn beef sandwich and a serving of potato latkes, delicious hash browns with applesauce or sour sauce. To drink, a glass of homemade lemonade. I recommend going early on a Friday or Saturday after a night out in the bustling East Village or Lower East Side as they don’t close and a pastrami sandwich will recharge your batteries to keep the party going.

Where is it? Located at 205 East Houston Street, corner of Ludlow Street.

Opening hours :from Monday to Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 10:45 p.m.; Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2:45 a.m.; On Fridays they open at 8am and only close on Sundays at 10.45pm.

8. Chelsea Market

Top-8-places-to-eat-in-New-York-2023

Before its resurrection as a hip neighborhood, the Meatpacking District was an industrial area filled with slaughterhouses and packing plants that supplied New York with meat. After its successful redevelopment, this area is one of the trendiest in the city and is full of trendy shops, art galleries and amazing restaurants.

One of these places was the old Nabisco cookie factory, the creator of the famous Oreo, which has been transformed into a spectacular gourmet market called Chelsea Market which has managed to preserve the industrial charm of the original building with the latest trends. gastronomic.

What should you try?

Literally everything! If you’re around visiting High Line Park or the Whitney Museum and have worked up an appetite, don’t hesitate, head to Chelsea Market as you’ll love its fast food stalls. They have everything! Pizzas, tacos, sushi, pasta, noodles, seafood… This is the best option if you are traveling to New York in a group and there is no consensus on where to eat. Everyone orders what they want and then shares at one of the tables scattered around the market.

If you go there during the day, you can complete your visit to Chelsea Market by walking around the building to see other very nice places such as the Posman Books bookshop or the Artists & Fleas market. If you visit in the evening, after dinner, head to the Chelsea Music Hall in the basement of the market. A place where you can enjoy the New York night with good music, delicious cocktails and a great atmosphere.

Where is it? Located at 75 9th Ave, NY 10011

Opening hours : Chelsea Market is open Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Where should a first-time visitor eat in New York?

Where are you from? From elsewhere in the US, maybe also from Canada, I’m not sure, so my answer is for people visiting Europe. I would say the archetypal New York food would start with New York steak. This is a cut rather than a way the steak is cooked. Simply cook it over coals and serve with fries, a salad and maybe a sauce.

Then I would choose hamburgers, cheeseburgers and hot dogs. For burgers I would recommend going to a reasonably good restaurant, but for a hot dog I would recommend buying from a street vendor, perhaps in Central Park. I would also recommend trying other street foods.

If you like Chinese and Japanese cuisine, I recommend trying some good New York restaurants for those cuisines. Also try Vietnamese. These kitchens are good in New York and better than many Asian restaurants in Europe. However, Indian food is much better in the UK.

Then something that I don’t consider brilliant but probably worth trying is a sub, a shortened form of a sub, a sandwich. I don’t know why it’s called that, maybe because its shape resembles a submarine.

The problem is that, according to European tastes, even the best bread from the United States is pretty mediocre. But toppings can be interesting and good.

It will definitely be superior to Subway because Subway is to subs what McDonald’s is to burgers, although my opinion is that Subway is good enough for a fast food restaurant, while I really don’t like McDonald’s food .

I would recommend trying an American breakfast because it’s different. You may or may not like it, but it’s worth a try. American apple pie is very similar to Dutch apple pie and just as good.

America was once known for its ice cream, but in recent years it has lost some of its appeal. It seems pressure from the health lobby has led to ice cream with less-tasting ingredients dominating the market. I’m sure dairy-rich ice cream is still out there, but it’s a matter of finding it.
