Who invented the ice cream sundae?

Ed Berners invented the ice cream sundae in 1881. Bernese customer George Hallauer asked Berners to serve him a plate of ice cream topped with the syrup used for sodas. Berner liked the dish and added it to his regular menu, charging a nickel.

George Giffy, a competing soda fountain owner from Manitowoc, Wisconsin, felt he should serve the same syrupy concoction as Ed Berners. However, Giffy felt the nickel price was too cheap and decided to only serve the dish on Sundays, which soon became the dish’s name – “Ice Cream Sunday”. Once Giffy realized he was making a lot of money off “Ice Cream Sunday”, he changed the name to “Ice Cream Sundae” and served it daily.

How can I make sundaes at home?

There are an almost endless number of ways to make sundaes. Typical parts of a sundae are usually the ice cream(s), sauce(s), whipped cream, and dry toppings. The key to a delicious sundae is thinking about how all the flavors will work together. Vanilla ice cream is like a blank slate…it will usually go with any type of sauce or topping. Chocolate ice cream goes well with many sauces and toppings too. Ice creams with stronger or more complex flavors can “fight” with certain sauces and toppings. Building your own sundaes at home is a great way to experiment with flavors. And don’t limit yourself to traditional tub ice cream sauces or toppings… fruit jellies and jams are good on ice cream, sliced or pureed fresh fruit with a little sugar is also nice, lemon syrup lemon maple is great on a lot of ice cream…the list goes on. Build and enjoy!

Is pineapple a legit topping for an ice cream sundae?

Good morning! As an expert on food and flavor combinations, I’m happy to share my thoughts on whether pineapple is a legitimate topping for an ice cream sundae.

First, let me start by saying that taste is subjective and what one person likes may not be liked by another. However, when it comes to pairing flavors, certain guidelines can be followed to create a more harmonious and enjoyable experience. In my opinion, pineapple can definitely be a legit topping for an ice cream sundae, but that depends on the other flavors and ingredients used.

For example, if you’re making a tropical-themed sundae with coconut ice cream, macadamia nuts, and a drizzle of caramel sauce, pineapple would be a great addition to round out the overall flavor profile. On the other hand, if you’re going for a more classic sundae with vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, and whipped cream, pineapple might not be the best choice and might conflict with the other flavors. Ultimately it comes down to personal preference and experimentation, so don’t be afraid to try new combinations and see what works for you!

Speaking of personal experiences, I remember a time when I was experimenting with different ice cream toppings and decided to try pineapple on a whim. I was skeptical at first, but after taking a bite of the cool, creamy vanilla ice cream with the sweet and tangy pineapple chunks, I was pleasantly surprised. It added a refreshing twist to the traditional sundae and made it more tropical and summery. From then on I was addicted to pineapple as an ice cream topping and even experimented with other flavors like strawberry and coconut. So my advice to you is to give it a try and see if it’s a topping you like!

What makes the best ice cream sundae?

Part 1 of 3: Choosing your utensils

Choose your serving bowl:

While sundaes are delicious in any type of container, choosing the right bowl can definitely add to your experience. The traditional ice cream sundae container is the tulip sundae glass. However, you can also use boats, bowls or cups. Use a bucket if you like – you can make your ice cream sundae as big as you want.

Select your spoon:

It may seem like an easy task, but your selection of spoons can change the experience of eating a sundae. If you’re eating out of a tall sundae glass, choose a long, thin spoon. This will allow you to get the ice cream from the bottom without getting your hands dirty. If you eat from a simple bowl, you can use any spoon you like. Some people prefer big spoons for big bites, but watch out for brain freeze!

Warm up a scoop of ice cream:

In order to get the perfect scoops of ice cream that you see on the perfect cups, you have to use a special ice cream scoop. To help them glide smoothly through frozen ice cream, fill a glass with warm water. Place the scoop in there and let it soak until you’re ready to serve the ice cream.

Part 2 of 3: Create your sundae base

Coat the bottom of your dish with sauce:

You can use hot fudge, chocolate syrup, fruit sauce, caramel sauce, or any sauce your heart desires. This step is optional, but can be useful to ensure your sundae has the correct ice cream to sauce ratio. Often the bottom of the layer is devoid of sauce and toppings. Putting sauce in the pan before placing ice cream in it will ensure that your last bites of sundae have their fair share of sauce.

Pour your ice cream into your dish:

Using your lukewarm ice cream scoop, place two to three generous scoops of your favorite ice cream in the bottom of the dish. Regular vanilla ice cream is the classic ice cream to use for a sundae, but don’t feel limited. You can use chocolate, strawberries, cookies and cream, cookie dough, or any other flavor your heart desires.

Heat your sauce in the microwave:

It won’t take long – just warm them up for a few seconds. The sauces will be much easier to drizzle over your ice cream once they’ve warmed up a bit. This is especially useful if you want to top your sundae with something like peanut butter, which is obviously much thicker than normal sauce. Be sure to only microwave sauces that are in microwave-safe containers, or transfer the sauce to a small bowl or mug before heating.

Pour sauce over ice cream:

You can use the same sauce you coated the bottom of the dish with or mix it up! Hot melted fudge is a classic ice cream sundae sauce, but there are plenty of other fun options at grocery stores. Try caramel sauce, strawberry sauce, butterscotch, or marshmallow fluff. Use a spoon to spoon the sauce over your sundae or use the sauces that come in a squeeze container.

Part 3 of 3: Selecting your toppings

Add something crunchy:

Texture is an important aspect of the sundae that can be overlooked. Adding something with a little crunch will create a nice contrast to the smooth ice cream and sauce. There are many options for crispy toppings. For a healthier option, add chopped peanuts or almonds. Big candy lovers can add something like M&M’s, crushed Oreos or any chopped candy bar. Sugary cereals, like Fruit Loops, can also be used on sundaes.

Choose something fluffy:

Some people love soft sundae toppings, and some people hate them. If you add gummy bears or gummy worms to your sundae, they will harden up a bit, making them harder to chew. You may or may not like that. Easier-to-chew options include crumbled brownies, cookie dough pieces, or mini Reeses.

Add something fruity:

You can add a handful of strawberries or blueberries to make your sundae slightly healthier. Sliced banana is a classic addition! Shredded coconut can add a good flavor while adding a bit of texture. You can also add different fruit sauces and jams to your ice cream sundae to make it more fruity. Even if you don’t want a lot of fruit on your sundae, consider topping it with a cherry – it’s tradition!

Finish your sundae:

If desired, add a dollop of whipped cream for the grand finale. Serve with the spoon of your choice and don’t forget to grab a napkin – the avalanches of toppings are real! Enjoy your delicious personalized sundae.
