6. Dickson’s Farmstand Meats

Amidst the hustle and bustle of Chelsea Market, its basement has less shops and crowds but just as incredible food as the main floor. Dickson’s Farmstand Meats has great quality beef that’s brought in from upstate, priding themselves on their hot dogs being 70% beef and 30% pork fat.

Their famous dogs are smoked over hickory and apple wood, giving them a delicious and surprising flavor. Though there are many different toppings to choose from, the Japanese Kewpie mayo is an absolute must.

7. Kings of Kobe

Make a pit stop at Kings of Kobe if you’re looking for the best hot dogs in NYC. Their specialty is American wagyu beef burgers and hot dogs, making each bite equally wholesome and delicious.

8. Tony Dragon’s Grille

Tony Dragon’s Grille, a Mediterranean grab-and-go joint on the Upper East Side, might not be the first place one thinks to grab a grilled hot dog, but they definitely serve one of NYC’s best hot dogs.

Parked on 62nd and Madison, the beautiful blue food truck with gorgeous violet flowers draped along the roof of the car will surely grab your attention, luring you over to have a once-over at the menu.

From there, order both dogs: The NYC Tony Dog and the Gyspy Dog. The Tony has onions and peppers and will even make vegetable-fearing children want another bite. The Gyspy has a bit of a kick to it (thanks to the delicious chili moni) but don’t let that deter you from ordering one!

We found out that we had waited until the last day to see the Picasso sculpture exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in 2015. We went there late afternoon, thinking we would have a nice dinner in the one of the cafes in the museum or somewhere in the neighborhood. . Oops! It was also Super Bowl Sunday, and everything, I mean EVERYTHING was closed.

The display was delicious, but we were starving. We picked up the car and drove through expanding blocks – nothing was open! It was spooky to imagine we had to drive the 1 1/2 hours home to eat, but then, on 54th Street, we spotted a “dirty water” Sabrett hot dog cart! Oh! Two dogs each, sauerkraut and mustard, two orange sodas…. nectar and ambrosia! My vote goes too NYC.

Where to find the best hot dogs in New York?

Nathan’s is the classic and he’s a great dog, but I prefer Gray’s Papaya. The papaya dog (which contains no papaya – all beef) has a nice snap and is grilled enough to have a bit of smoke without being overpowering. Get it with the onion sauce and add a little brown mustard.

$1.95 is a bargain for one dog, but the $4.95 recession special includes two dogs and a drink and is one of the best lunch deals in New York. They’re famous for their papaya juice, but don’t miss the pina colada or coconut champagne. Be careful though, there are no places available.

They used to have many locations, but now it’s only 2090 Broadway on 72nd Street right across from the 1, 2, 3 station.

Are New York Hot Dogs Safe to Eat?

As a born and raised New Yorker, I can attest to having eaten many New York hot dogs over the years. However, there are hot dogs and there are hot dogs.

When you refer to New York hot dogs, are you referring to Nathan’s Famous? Sabrett – sold all over New York from carts? Or, perhaps, you are thinking of National Hebrew – famous Kosher.

Generally speaking, I’m assuming you’re referring to the Sabrett hot dogs sold at the ubiquitous carts around town. Frankfurters languish for hours in a bath of hot water, and when I was younger I was convinced that was the only way to cook sausages. Later, I learned to grill – but you’re trying to grill in a New York apartment with no patio.

Over the years I’ve learned the factors that make hot dogs one of my last go-tos for a quick snack, unless I have a pack of Hebrew nationals on hand. I bought the hook, line and sinker into their campaign to have higher standards for hot dog production than USDA inspectors.

On the other hand, the occasional Sabrett hot dog never made me sick, and as my mom used to say, “everything in moderation” is always a good rule to follow.

What are the most popular hot dogs in New York? What are the most popular toppings for hot dogs in New York?

It’s either a Sabrett hot dog from one of those hot dog carts or Gray’s Papaya. Gray’s is a chain of hot dog restaurants, with its flagship restaurant located at 2090 Broadway at 72nd Street. As of June 2020, it had an operational location during the COVID-19 pandemic. Several other locations had previously closed. Gray’s Papaya is famous for its inexpensive (once sold for 50 cents, now, as of 2021, sold for $2.95), high-quality hot dogs considered some of New York’s best.

The “papaya” in the name refers to the papaya fruit drink sold at the establishment. They also sell orange, grape, piña colada, coconut champagne (non-alcoholic), and banana daiquiri (non-alcoholic) fruit drinks.

Nobody uses the word “toppings” with hot dogs or hamburgers, it’s just weird. It’s “extras”, “fixins”, “add-ons” or “What do you want on your hot dog?” or they are called by their name, but not by “toppings”: sauerkraut, onions (onions in sauce), mustard, relish, etc. “I’ll take two dogs with sauerkraut and onions.
